Corona Works

In this phase, figurative elements increasingly recede in favor of a more open and independent visual language. Color, form, and material gain autonomy and move to the forefront.

The works created during the COVID-19 pandemic are marked by a particular density and inner concentration. In a time of isolation, uncertainty, and withdrawal, the engagement with existential themes gains renewed intensity.

Memories, personal experiences, and the tension between withdrawal and new beginnings flow into the works. At the same time, contemporary political developments, in particular the war between Russia and Ukraine, lead to a renewed confrontation with and processing of his own experiences from the Second World War.

In this phase, Winkler returns, through the engagement with past and present, to central themes of his work. At the same time, it marks the end of his artistic activity: following a stroke on August 28, 2022, he was no longer able to continue working artistically.

Against this background, the guiding motifs of his work become further condensed. Beginning and end, alpha and omega, enter into a direct relationship and become perceptible as a continuous line within his artistic practice.

The works reflect, on the one hand, traces of earlier pictorial structures, and on the other, a growing process of dissolution and reconfiguration. The image is increasingly developed from within itself and becomes a site of movement, condensation, and transformation.
